Participation of SARTUC at Regional Symposium on Women Migrant Workers: BLMAs as an Instrument for Change

The Regional Symposium was organised by the GOALS project (organising team from ILO and UN Women) on 16-18 May 2023 at Kathmandu, Nepal. In the first session -"Setting the Scenes", Brother Laxman Basnet, General Secretary, SARTUC presented the issue of "General Secretary of SARTUC expressed his view on women migrant workers’ rights and the role of trade unions.


 

The Regional Symposium had participants from South Asia and some from South East Asia and comprised of representatives from government, trade unions, employers organisations, civil society and academia. The programme was supported by experts and resource persons coming from UN agencies, government, international organisations, women’s rights organisations, grassroots organisations, and workers and employers groups.

Brother Laxman Basnet, General Secretary, SARTUC presented the issue of "General Secretary of SARTUC expressed his view on women migrant workers’ rights and the role of trade unions, where he expressed the realities of women migrant workers in South Asia from the trade union perspective. Further he expressed, South Asia witnesses a significant outflow of women migrant workers across various sectors. They face exploitative labor conditions, gender-based discrimination, high recruitment costs, and limited legal protection. Bans and restrictions have not deterred migration but instead increased informal channels. Trade unions play a crucial role in advocating for their rights and providing support.
