National-Levels Orientation Trainings on Women's Rights and the Roles of Women in Trade Unions to Strategize and Organize the Unorganized Workers in the Trade Union Movement: Compiled Report is follow up for the Regional Orientation Training on Women’s Rights in the World of Work, and the Roles of Women in Trade Unions in South Asia held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5 to 8 September 2022. The participants from the regional training were the facilitators for the national level orientation trainings. All the affiliated countries completed the follow up activity at national level.
The unorganised sector in Nepal comprises an overwhelming portion of the workforce – more than 90 per cent, including both male and female workers. Moreover, within the unorganised sector, women workers often face unique challenges, including limited access to social protection, low wages, and gender-based discrimination. Recognizing the need for change, efforts are being made to engage women workers in the unorganized sector and promote their participation in trade unions, the South Asian Regional Trade Union Council (SARTUC), in collaboration with FNV Mondiaal, conducted a one-day national-level orientation training on “Orientation training for the unorganized workers on Women's Rights and the Roles of Women in Trade Unions to strategize and organize in the trade union movement.” in Kathmandu, Nepal on 13 July 2023.
Objectives
- To enhance participants' understanding of the trade union movement and its significance in protecting women workers’ rights, gender equality, and the importance of women's empowerment in the workplace;
- To share experiences and knowledge among trade union leaders from SARTUC affiliates (Nepal) on the challenges and opportunities in organising the unorganised sectors’ workers in Nepal;
- To emphasize the importance of gender equality within the trade union movement and encourage the representation and inclusion of women workers, including the unorganised sector;
- Equip participants with the necessary skills and strategies to advocate for women's rights, and strategize and organise unorganized workers within the trade union movement.
