Kathmandu - ITUC-NAC organized a two-day international solidarity meeting on the aftermath of the Gorkha Earthquake of Nepal from 3 to 4 September 2015 in Kathmandu, Nepal. National and international trade unionists participated in the meeting along with representatives from the Government of Nepal (GoN).
The meeting was organized to appeal to the GoN to prepare strategies and campaign for the reconstruction of Nepal, post earthquake, with focus on creating more jobs – decent jobs. The meeting concluded with a draft of the roadmap for reconstruction of Nepal, where trade unionists have voiced for creating at least two hundred thousand jobs for reconstruction, declare 2015-2025 a decade of reconstruction, re-assess and revisit the damages from earthquake, and promulgation of workers’ agendas in the new constitution.
With over 8,700 deaths and 22,300 injured by the earthquake of April 25 and its aftershocks, there are innumerable affected and living a painful life post earthquake. The loss is unparalleled to anything but Nepalese have shown resilience and determination to building a prosperous, better Nepal.
The meeting concluded by signing, and thus, endorsing the roadmap. The draftedroadmap from the meeting will provide a blueprint for governments, national and international organizations to work in partnership and coordination for rebuilding a more safer and better Nepal.
